Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 4, 2026

This site, Japanese Festival (japanesefestival.net), is a free travel guide to central Japan. We respect your privacy and want to be transparent about how we collect and use information when you visit. By using this site you agree to this Privacy Policy.

This policy is written in plain English. A Japanese version (日本語版) is provided at the bottom of this page.

1. Who Operates This Site

This site is operated by Japanese Festival. We do not publish a public mailing address or phone number. To get in touch, please use our Contact form.

2. Information We Collect

Information you give us

When you fill out our contact form, we receive:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • The subject line and the content of your message

We use this only to reply to you. We do not sell, rent, or share contact form data with third parties for marketing.

Information collected automatically

When you browse the site, the following is collected automatically:

  • IP address (anonymized where possible)
  • Browser type, operating system, device type
  • Pages you view and how long you spend on each
  • The link or search that brought you to the site

This information is used in aggregate to understand which articles are useful and to keep the site running smoothly. How much of it is collected depends on where you are browsing from — see Section 3.

Affiliate link clicks

When you click an affiliate button or link on this site, the click first passes through a redirect on our own server (an address beginning with /go/) and is then sent on to the partner. Our server writes one line to a log file: the time of the click, which link was used, which article the click came from, and whether the request looked like an automated crawler rather than a person. That log contains no IP address, no cookie value, and nothing else that identifies you. We use it to see which recommendations readers actually find useful.

3. Cookies and Third-Party Services

We use cookies — small files saved on your device — and a small number of third-party services to keep the site working, to measure how it is used, and to fund it through advertising and affiliate links. Whether the analytics and advertising cookies below are set at all depends on the region you are browsing from; this is explained under the table.

Service What it does on this site Cookies and storage
Google Tag Manager (Google) Loads and manages the measurement tags listed below, and applies the regional defaults described under this table. Sets no cookies of its own.
Google Analytics 4 (Google) Aggregate measurement: page views, traffic sources, how far down a page readers scroll, and which links are clicked. Analytics cookies. Not set for visitors from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland.
Google AdSense (Google) Display advertising. We do not choose which individual ads appear. Advertising cookies. Not set for visitors from the EEA, the UK or Switzerland.
Microsoft Clarity (Microsoft) Heatmaps and session recordings — a replay of how a page was scrolled and clicked, which we use to fix confusing layouts. Recordings are masked by default, so they show interactions rather than readable text. First-party cookies. For visitors from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Clarity runs in consent mode and sets no cookies.
Impact.com Affiliate tracking for partner programs that run on the Impact network, so a booking can be credited to this site. Cookies set when you click a partner link.
Travelpayouts The affiliate network behind most of our hotel, tour and ticket links. Cookies set when you click through to a partner.
GetYourGuide A partner analytics script that loads across the site, plus affiliate links to GetYourGuide tours. Cookies set by GetYourGuide.
Affiliate partners — Klook, Booking.com, Viator, GetYourGuide, EKTA (travel insurance) and Musubi Kiln (via the Awin network) Credit a referral to this site if you book or buy after clicking one of our links. See our Affiliate Disclosure for the current list. Their own cookies, set on their own sites after you click.
japanesefestival.net (this site) A cookie named jf_lang_pref remembers which language version of the site you chose with the language switcher. First-party cookie, 180 days. Only set if you use the language switcher. Never used for analytics or advertising.

We also use Google reCAPTCHA v3 on our contact form to block spam. reCAPTCHA collects hardware and software information from your device and sends it to Google for analysis. Use of reCAPTCHA is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Regional cookie defaults — and why there is no consent banner

This site does not display a cookie consent banner. Instead, the Google tags on the site use Google Consent Mode v2 with defaults that are decided by the region you are browsing from. The defaults are applied before any measurement or advertising tag runs, so nothing is stored on your device first and asked about afterwards.

  • If you visit from the European Economic Area (the 27 EU countries plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), the United Kingdom or Switzerland: analytics storage, advertising storage, advertising user data and advertising personalization all default to denied. Google Analytics 4 and Google AdSense therefore set no analytics or advertising cookies on your device, no advertising identifiers are sent, and ads are not personalized. Microsoft Clarity applies its own consent mode for these regions and likewise sets no cookies. We receive only aggregate, cookieless signals about page visits.
  • If you visit from anywhere else: analytics and advertising storage default to granted, so the services in the table above may set cookies. You can still opt out at any time using the options below.

Your region is determined by Google when the page loads. We do not store it, and we do not ask you to choose — the setting is applied automatically on every visit.

Affiliate cookies work differently: they are set by the partner, on the partner’s own site, and only after you deliberately click through to it. If you never click an affiliate link, no affiliate cookie is set. You are also free to search for the same hotel or tour directly on the partner’s site instead.

How to opt out

  • Google Analytics — install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, which blocks Google Analytics on every site you visit.
  • Personalized advertising — turn it off in your Google Ads Settings. You can also read how Google uses cookies in advertising in Google’s advertising policies.
  • Microsoft Clarity — Microsoft offers an opt-out through the Digital Advertising Alliance page at optout.aboutads.info (select Microsoft). Clarity also supports the Global Privacy Control signal if your browser sends one. Clarity does not respond to the older “Do Not Track” browser setting.
  • Your browser — every major browser lets you block or delete cookies, block third-party cookies, or browse in a private window. Tracking-protection settings and content-blocking extensions will also stop the scripts above from loading. Blocking any of them will not break this site.

4. Affiliate Disclosure

Many of our articles contain affiliate links. If you click one and make a booking or purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This helps fund the site. We only recommend services and products we have personally used or thoroughly researched. A short disclosure also appears at the end of every article that contains affiliate links. See our full Affiliate Disclosure for details.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the data described above to:

  • Respond to your inquiries
  • Maintain and improve the site
  • Understand how readers use our content
  • Display relevant ads and track affiliate referrals
  • Comply with applicable laws

We do not use automated decision-making or profiling to make decisions that affect you.

6. Data Retention

  • Contact form submissions — kept only as long as needed to handle your inquiry.
  • Analytics data — retained in Google Analytics 4 for 14 months.
  • Affiliate click logs — kept as a record of how our recommendations perform. As described in Section 2, they contain no personal data.
  • Cookies — expire based on each cookie’s individual lifespan; session cookies are deleted when you close your browser.

7. Your Rights

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland

You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to our processing of your personal data, and the right to data portability. Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Submit any request via our Contact form.

As described in Section 3, analytics and advertising storage is denied by default for visitors from these regions, so the Google and Microsoft services on this site do not write or read cookies on your device during your visit.

If you are in California (CCPA / CPRA)

You have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not sell personal information in the traditional sense. To opt out of interest-based advertising, use the Google Ads Settings and browser options listed in Section 3. Submit requests via our Contact form.

Cookie settings

We do not show a cookie consent banner. What is set on your device is decided by the regional defaults described in Section 3, and you can opt out at any time using the options listed there or through your browser settings.

8. Children’s Privacy

This site is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted information through our contact form, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes and Contact

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be highlighted at the top of the page for at least 30 days.

For privacy-related questions or to exercise any of the rights above, please use our Contact form.
